HOME / THE ITINEARY / ITALY / STAGES OF ITALIAN ITINERARY
Crossing the Swiss border at Villa di Chiavenna and descending from the mountains, the route passes through Chiavenna, follows the shore of Lake Como up to Lecco, then that of the Adda River up to Vaprio d’Adda before heading towards Milan, skirting the Martesana canal. In Lombardy, from the center of Milan to the Via Francigena, it coincides for a long stretch with the Monks’ Way, born from the study of a route in collaboration with the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU) of the Polytechnic of Milan – now available on the website www.valledeimonaci.org. Before reaching the ford on the Po River in Corte Sant’Andrea, the itinerary crosses the only hill in Milan and reaches the village of San Colombano al Lambro, where the memory of the passage of the Irish monk is still alive.
In the Piacenza area, the path climbs little by little from the plain onto the hills around Val Trebbia, crossing suggestive villages of the Apennines up to the town of Bobbio, where you can still visit the monastery and the tomb of the Saint.
It is among the 19 religious paths promoted by the Lombardy Region, where the pilgrim and the tourist coexist.
The Columban Way is a 330 km long trail located in Italy, which is divided into 18 stages. The first 10 stages cover a distance of 180 km from the Swiss border to Milan, while the remaining 8 stages span the distance from Milan to Bobbio, which is 150 km. Additionally, there is one more stage covering approximately 8 km from Bobbio to Coli, leading to the St Michael’s Cave.
