HOME / STAGES OF ROUTE IN ITALY / LEG 15
Departure:
Santimento
Arrival:
Pieve di Verdeto
Distance:
21,5 Km
We start again from the Church of Santimento and turn right to cross the town. We continue on the same road until, after 100 m, it bends to the left, following the signs for Rottofreno. Immediately after the cemetery we remain on this road and, after almost 2 km, we find ourselves passing over the motorway on an overpass: be careful as there is no protection for pedestrians. Excluding this “automotive” intersection, the entire stretch is still immersed in the countryside and shaded by the trees that line the road. We pass the railway level crossing and continue for another 250 m until we reach the state road, here we turn right and continue for 900 m on the SP 10.
Thus, we enter Rottofreno and reach the church of San Michele, where we take Via Roma on the left, a tree-lined avenue that brings us to the end of the town center. Continuing to follow the road, we return to the Piacenza countryside, but pay attention because in this stretch, too, we are on the road; after 1.7 km, we reach Centora. At the T-junction, we turn right and cross the small village, made up of some farmhouses and a church; once we have reached the town, we continue along the main road, again surrounded by fields, and after 1.5 km, we arrive in Campremoldo di Sotto. At the crossroads in the center of the village, we turn right, following the signs for Borgonovo and Gragnano, and leave the town again on the main road. After 500 m, we continue to follow the road that bends to the left, and after another 500 m, we arrive at a roundabout, which we cross; we continue straight for 150 m, and at the crossroads, we continue straight towards Campremoldo di Sopra, thus finally leaving the provincial road.
Once we reach the stop sign, after about 1.5 km, we cross the intersection, again being very careful because there is no protected crossing, and continues straight. After 500 m, a little hidden on the right, there is the entrance to the Caminata San Sisto, now a farm. After a few meters, we continued straight for 3.5 km at the crossroads until the dry Luretta stream, which we followed, staying on the asphalt road. We felt the route start to climb, and we continued straight for another 2.4 km. We arrive at the intersection with the provincial road that leads us towards the center of Agazzano, which we take, continuing straight ahead and skirting the cemetery on the right. At the roundabout, we follow the road that goes up to the left: we are entering the center of the town, and the asphalt gives way to the “pavé.” After passing Piazza Giovanni XXIII, the route continues straight on to also cross the subsequent Piazza Europa, then taking Via Ranuzio Anguissola Scotti, then Via Kennedy, which we follow until the intersection with the provincial road; here we continue to climb to the left for 450 m, remaining on the left side of the road, slightly less exposed, after which we take the dirt path that appears, a little hidden, on our right, immediately after the bend in the road and a brick farmhouse. After crossing the provincial road, we go up for 150 m, then we turn left following the path and proceed for another 350 m until we come across a farmhouse, which is now a farmhouse. After another 100 m, we turn right; the road returns to asphalt, but for a short stretch: after another 150 m, at the Y crossroads, we take the path on the left and follow it for 1 km. We are almost at the top of the hill; the road dips between the trees. At the crossroads with the indication for Piacenza, we proceed straight, following the direction for Montecanino and Vidiano; we continue to climb, and after 200 m, at the new crossroads, we follow the sign for the ancient Pieve di Verdeto on the right. The dirt path climbs until it meets some houses, turns slightly left, and after 450 m, finally reaches the well-deserved destination of the Pieve.

The shit museum Location Castelbosco,
Frazione Campremoldo Sopra
The exhibition rooms were inaugurated in 2015 on the ground floor of the company headquarters in the medieval castle of Castelbosco. Collected here, between continuous updates and new commissions, are testimonies of aesthetic and scientific, human and animal, and current and past experiences, which make shit into practical and living material. From the dung beetle, considered divine by the Egyptians (and symbol of the Museum), to the use of dung in architecture, from ancient Italic civilizations to Africa, passing through historical-literary works such as Pliny’s “Naturalis Historia”. Up to the most current scientific research and works of art that touch on using and reusing scraps and waste. A contemporary cabinet of curiosities that finds its guiding principle in the science and art of transformation.

Halfway between the plai and the hills, Agazzano rises along the course of the Luretta strsam, west of the captal. The The castle of Agazzano composed of a fortress of military origin dating back to the 13th century, rebuilt in 1475, and an 18th-century residential complex, constitute a point of interest. The Scotti family, from which Alberto was acclaimed the first lord of Piacenza, descended, conquered, and maintained power over Agazzano from 1200. The fortress is testimony to this. Subsequently, with the death of the last male heir in the 18th century, the Anguissola family joined the Scotti family; later, the ties also opened to the Gonzagas, who still own the Castle today. The castle cannot be without the gost. In Agazzano, the guest of honor is Pier Maria Scotti, better known as “il Buso” for the wounds he left on enemies in combat. The Castles is part of Duchy Castles circuit
For a break, a stop at the historical café in the square, founded in 1890, was recently restored with attention to the recovery of original materials and signs. The rolling hills are suitable for cultivating grapes, which the Val Luretta and nearby Val Tidone cellars trasform into wine.
The rolling hills are suitable for cultivating grapes, which the Val Luretta and nearby Val Tidone cellars transform into wine. Grilled game, cracklings, and roast “coppa” are added to the traditional “anolini”, “tortellini con la coda”, and “pissarei” dishes.
In and around the municipality, riding stables and riding schools offer horse riding and trekking services.
The traditional fair falls on Ascension Day weekend in May.
In the surrounding area, an unmissable event at the beginning of August is the Momeliano fair, with special fireworks shows, a dance hall, and local dishes and foot marches. In the surrounding area, noteworthy are the Sanctuary of Madonna del Pilastrello, the castles of Boffalora (private), of Momeliano, of Lisignano, and Villa Tavernago (hotel and villa for receptions) visible externally, together with the many other manors present on this territory, they mark and distinguish the landscape of Piacenza. The area in part of the Route of Wines and Flavors of the Piacentini Hills.
The ancient “Pieve di Verdeto” is a church dating back to the Romanesque-Gothic era located near Agazzano, on the Cammino di San Colombano route in the last stretch before Bobbio. The first news of its archpriesthood dates back to 1123, but its foundation is much older, certainly before the year one thousand. In 1123, Bishop Arduino donated it to the Cathedral of Piacenza.
In 1132, an act of Pope Innocent II listed eight parish churches among the assets of the Cathedral, including the Parish Church of Verdeto with all its chapels. Still, it exempted it from paying tithes because the income had been very modest since then.
Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, the church was remodeled entirely: the high altar in polychrome marble was inserted, and the entire covering of the vault and the presbytery walls were decorated.
The frescoes, of exceptional artistry and quality, date back to the Bibiena school and constitute an example of rare perspective decoration.
The rebirth of the ancient parish church began in 2009 through extensive redevelopment works on the structure, which today can accommodate 25 people.
