HOME / STAGES OF ROUTE IN ITALY / LEG 16
Departure:
Pieve di Verdeto
Arrival:
Bobbiano (Travo)
Distance:
19,2 Km
We start in Verdeto from the relevant parish church, i.e., from the church of San Tommaso Apostolo, going back along the route of the previous stage until reaching the crossroads with the main road, where we turn right to get the ‘Agronauta’ farmhouse and then continue among vineyards and fields in the direction of Montecanino, which can be reached after about 3 km from the start. At the crossroads for the ruins of his castle, you can decide whether to take a short uphill right to visit them or continue straight on the main road leading to the small towns of Cuccavello and then Vidiano.
After about 2 km, at a hairpin bend, take the dirt path on the left that descends towards the town of Poggio Arena, continuing until you reach the provincial road on which you turn left towards the village of Pomaro, where you pass the ruins of an ancient church with the adjacent building, and where you can stop for a break (there is a small table for a small picnic). Without entering the town, we then continue following our winding road, which after about 3 km ends on another asphalt road, where we turn left (direction Piozzano); at the next crossroads, turning right and following the signs for Monteventano low area, you arrive at Guada, where the La Vallescura farmhouse is located, along the Luretta stream, with the possibility of taking a break.
You then continue along a straight road called Vallescura, which runs between meadows and woods at the foot of the hills, meeting a first crossroads for Montebello and then, after about 1 km, a second crossroads which, on the right, leads to the castle of Monteventano, of which a high circular tower of about thirty meters remains. Instead, continue straight for another kilometer, continuing to descend until the bridge where the road crosses the stream, then turning left and climbing up the hills on the opposite bank in the direction of the Agriturismo Val Luretta; pass it and at the crossroads that soon follow, ignoring the road that goes to the right, take the dirt road on the left that goes up between the fields towards the hamlet of Fragola until reaching the castle of Monticello in about 1.5 km, high above the ridge with Val Trebbia.
In the spring of 1945, the castle was the site of a bloody partisan battle, remembered from the monument in front of the building.
Continue going uphill to the right for about 3 km along the asphalted ridge road that runs alongside the Ca’ del Guerra area and then continues through a forest up to the Costa del Bulla, where you cross it, bending to the right and then descending given the beautiful Bobbiano valley, a short side of the Trebbia Valley, with the Pietra Parcellara in the background and, further to the left, the small Pietra Perduca. Proceed along the Costa del Grillo, ignoring the deviations to the left and always going straight, until you reach the Case Rotte hamlet in about 2.5 km; here, you leave the main road to take a dirt path that descends on the left through the fields for about 500 m to a group of houses, where you continue to fall for another 300 m. You then arrive at a crossroads, where you turn right towards the Agriturismo “Le Due Noci” in the San Giorgio di Bobbiano area, the destination of our stage.

Tripadvisor
On the gentle slopes of the Luretta Valley lies the town of Piozzano, south of the capital. A hilly environment is divided between nature and culture, with architectural features of a defensive nature.
The parish church of SS Salvatore, with a portal by the Piacenza sculptor Paolo Perotti.
The remains of the castle were built in the 11th century.
Don’t miss the cylindrical keep of Monteventano, a castrense settlement dating back to the 10th century, the Romanesque parish church of Pomaro, the church of Saint John a San Gabriele, and the remains of the castle of Montecanino.
Mbk trekking and horseback riding routes are available in the surrounding area.
Starter of cured meats and meat dishes represent the local tradition, which includes a dish called “duls e brusc,” a dish based on chicken meat (turkey or pork) initially boiled and then cooked in a sauce of oil, lard, and onion flavored with vinegar, sugar, and raisins.
In June, the Piacenza breweries organized an event dedicated to local production.
Around the year thousand, the ancient Canianum area was defended by a large castle complex, and the castle, with a rectangular plan, stood on a hill to the left of the Luretta stream, in a position that allowed a broad view of the Po Valley.
Destroyed in 1164 by Federico Barbarossa, the building was rebuilt with towers, and the complex gradually grew to become a small fortified village owned by various noble families in the area.
The castle initially appeared as a fortified village based on a rectangular structure accessible after passing an entrance ravelin equipped with a drawbridge, the break-ins of which can still be seen. An unknown number of towers, 5 or 6 according to some sources, were present both inside the village and along the city walls, the main one of which was demolished in 1963 as it was considered heavily damaged and unsafe.
Of the entire structure, the ravelin located at the entrance, some buildings that have been remodeled to be used for residential purposes, and some sections that are not in continuity with each other and are part of the walls that delimited the village are still present. The best-preserved part of the castle is facing the northeastern side of the complex.
The village of Travo stands on the left bank of the Trebbia River, and its origins date back to the 5th millennium BC. In the 7th century, the territory entered the possessions of the Abbey of San Colombano di Bobbio, and after the fall of the Lombards, the Holy Roman Empire assigned Travo to the Malaspina family.
A small town in the lower Val Trebbia, located on the left bank of the river of the same name. It is part of the “Apennine of the four provinces”, where the mountains of Piacenza, Genoa, Alessandria, and Pavia border.
It has a thousand-year history and is an excellent starting point for those who want to go trekking, climbing, or simple walks. The ideal time to visit Travo is summer when the village is the soul of many daily vacationers; it is pleasant to walk along the Trebbia river along the ‘path of the Gods,’ so called because according to a legend it led to the ancient temple of Minerva Medica.
History and tradition inextricably link the fate of the patron saint of Piacenza Antoninus with this small town, where he is believed to have been martyred in 303; the Church of S.Antonino is nestled in the heart of the village, with a genuinely unique churchyard-terrace overlooking the river. The Anguissola Castle now owned by the Municipality, was for many centuries the home of this essential and illustrious family who ruled Travo for almost five centuries. The 1997 part of the structure is used as the seat of the Civic Archaeological Museum, which internally traces the history of the entire area’s population in the period between the Paleolithic and the Early Middle Ages.
In the town and the surrounding area, along the route of the Route of Wines and Flavors of the Piacenza Hills, you can taste typical local products with the DOP, DOC, and IGP labels.
Travo has various possibilities for practicing sports in dedicated structures or in the open air. Not far from the center, it has a sports center that includes football pitches, tennis courts, and a swimming pool for the summer season.
The area around Travo is entire of trekking paths and sees the two peaks that dominate the valley as essential stops: Pietra Perduca (659 m) e Pietra Parcellara (836 m), characterized by the presence of ophiolitic rocks, traditionally called Devil’s Rock.
In the locality of Cernusca (4.6 km), there is a riding school that offers riding courses and horseback riding for children and adults.
In addition to the patronal festival of July 4th, closely linked to Piacenza, Travo has now become known for the Giana Anguissola Literary Festival and the summer Travo Vintage event – evening reuse market.
A recommended destination is the tiny hamlet of S. Andrea, which overlooks the west bank of the Trebbia River, a few hundred meters from the village. Here stands the small Church of St.Maria has significant remains of its Romanesque past and the Archaeological Park, which still retains in situ traces of houses dating back to the Neolithic.
Not far from Travo, following the signs for Bobbiano, you go up the valley of the Dorbida stream along a path that leads in the direction of Monte Perduca, where the fifteenth-century oratory stands out, set on a serpentine rock, which is recommended to be visited during the Feast of Sant ‘Anna and Maria Assunta, when it is opened to the public for the occasion.
The Bobbiano Tower, mentioned for the first time in a document dating back to 1037, is a medieval tower located on a rocky spur in a dominant position concerning the surrounding landscape.
1164 Marquis Obizzo Malaspina obtained Bobbiano’s concession from Emperor Federico Barbarossa. In 1255, the castle was partially razed to the ground by the troops in the service of Oberto II Pallavicino; later, the building became one of the properties of the Anguissola family.
During the first years of the 16th century, the tower was used as a hideout by the gang led by the brigand Bertoletto.
Until the mid-2010s, the building, which became private property, was partially abandoned. The restoration work to make the building safe was completed in 2021. Only the tower and the neighboring church of San Michele remain in the destroyed castle.
