THE COLUMBAN WAY

A ROUTE THROUGH EuropE

The Columban Way is a European cultural project that crosses Europe, from north to south, connecting places and sites of historical interest in Ireland, England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein and Italina, traveled by the monk Columbanus and 12 of his companions between the sixth and seventh centuries. St. Columbanus is one of the most famous saints and pilgrims of the Middle Ages. He was first of all in fact, having traveled over five thousand kilometers from his native Ireland to Italy; but also in his disposition of mind and interior attitude, as his life and his writings remain to testify.
From the dense network of ties between the various civil and religious realities inspired by Columbanus, ideas and projects have arisen in many sectors, including the revival of that path that between the sixth and seventh centuries the Irish monk traveled on foot or by water, which became a reality thanks to the European Association of the Columban Way. One of the oldest pilgrimage routes in Europe is thus revived, traced by one of the most venerated and representative saints of the Early Middle Ages, an exponent of that migratory monastic phenomenon of Irish origin, which played a fundamental role in the birth of Western civilization and of Europe itself. A pilgrimage proposal that leads modern wayfarers to cross Europe and descend to Bobbio, which preserves its memory, its remains, its work and its teaching over the centuries.
