HOME / TAPPE TRACCIATO / TAPPA 6
Departure:
Lierna
Arrival:
Lecco
Distance:
17,6 Km
We continue the journey via Libertà (at the intersection with Genico).
We walk along Via della Libertà until a small roundabout where we take Via Sornico, which we follow until the end.
Here, a small crossroads: Via Bree comes up from the lake, which we leave on our right. We continue along the coast, taking via San Michele (which represents the continuation of via Sorico), which leads us to the Oratory of San Michele Arcangelo, which we leave on our right and then continue along the path of the Wayfarer.
Along the path, we pass the towns of Sormana and Rongio further ahead. We then continue to Maggiana (fraction of Mandello Lario). Here we cross the small historic center via Sant’Antonio and then continue via per Maggiana until we cross via del Pozzo on the left. A few meters before this intersection, we turned right instead, skirting the perimeter wall of the cemetery for a few meters. We continue on the Viandante path up to Abbadia Lariana.
The wonderful route winds along paths and mule tracks crossing various hamlets.
Arriving in Abbadia Lariana, following the directions (orange signs) of the “Sentiero del Viandante,” follow Via del Viandante to the end.
The street ends in an asphalted clearing. Cross it, and on the right, you will notice some steps. Once down the steps, continue straight on for a short stretch of asphalt road. After a few meters, we immediately take a grassy path on the right (also indicated by the trail signs). Continue on the path for a few minutes until you find the church of San Martino on the right, where you can admire a beautiful view of the lake.
From here begins the new section of the path (7 km), which was opened at the beginning of 2021. The well-marked route allows you to go down towards the lake and then go back up (metal ladder), passing the highway tunnel. You walk for about 1 km, then at a crossroads, you take a left onto the path descending towards the SS36.
Follow the path for about 2 km on the slopes of Mount Coltignone until a steep descent into the woods, which leads to the grounds of a restaurant, which we skirt along, keeping to the right. Then you go up a staircase on the left, at the end of which you turn right. Continue for about 1 km on the embankment protected by rockfall nets and then keep right at a crossroads to take a stile that leads to the asphalt road near a hairpin bend. Go towards the lake and follow the coplanar highway up to a petrol station where you cross it to take the lakeside cycle and pedestrian path. After about 1.2 km, we arrive at Piazza Cermenati, which overlooks the lake and is dedicated to sailors: a beautiful similarity with pilgrims. The stage ends in Lecco, at the Basilica S. Nicolò, which is located near the square and is easily reachable from the lakefront.
In Abbadia Lariana, if you are tired, once you reach the beautiful Church of San Martino, you can retrace your steps along the grassy path. At the end of this, you continue on the asphalt road, which, after about ten meters, turns left into Via Onedo. Here, you descend towards the long lake where it is possible to embark for Lecco. The navigation takes you to Lecco at the landing stage, which is almost in front of Piazza Cermenati.

The most beautiful part of this small village is certainly Mandello Bassa, the part that runs along the lake and where it is possible to admire the typical stone houses and the small port present in this area from which it is possible to leave for some visits to the lake. Walking along the shores of the lake, you can also come across small beaches or inlets where you can relax and sunbathe. In the city, there are some essential buildings from a historical point of view, such as the Church of Saint Lawrence and Church of Saint George, inside which some recently restored frescoes can be seen and from which it is possible to admire a splendid view of the lake.
The Moto Guzzi museum, born here, is an unmissable stop for motor lovers. Inside are some unique pieces on display, such as the first motorcycle built by Carlo Guzzi in 1919 and the legendary Otto Cilindri 500 from 1957, designed by Giulio Cesare Carcano.
A little curiosity about Mandello that few people know is that the village is a very well-equipped sports resort and boasts awards obtained by the Olympic athletes of the Rowing Club.
Thanks to the excellent climatic conditions and numerous services, today, Abbadia Lariana is a famous tourist center. Still, in the past, its strategic position on the communication routes made it a privileged point for controlling passages in the area. Not far from SS 36, coming from Lecco, we find the ruins of the medieval tower known as The Torraccia (or Torrazza). With a quadrangular base and 14 meters high, three walls of the original structure, dating back to around the 12th century, remain intact; the fourth was the subject of a heavy restoration at the end of the 1960s. The tower was part of a larger fortress complex, which extended to the shores of the lake; it is hypothesized that it had both a lookout and customs function for the collection of duties and the control of entries into the northern territory of Lecco. In the center of Abbadia, there are numerous religious buildings, including the Church of Saint Lawrence, built in the 13th century. At the behest of the Servite Fathers in the place where the Lombard king Desiderius, in 770, had the monastery of San Pietro built. Inside the church, touched several times over the centuries by the overflowing of the lake’s waters, it is possible to admire the frescoes relating to the martyrdom of San Lorenzo, a work from 1915 by the painter Luigi Tagliaferri, and two important paintings from the 17th century depicting devotion to Saint Augustine. Next to the church you can see the cloister of the ancient Benedictine abbey from which the town takes its name. An example of an industrial plant linked to silk processing, an activity of great importance in the Como area, is the former Filatoio Monti, purchased in 1818 by the silk worker Pietro Monti and remained in business until 1934. In 1978, the spinning mill and the spinning mill became property of the Municipality of Abbadia Lariana which carried out the first restoration works. The Civic Museum Setificio Monti, open to the public since 1998, shows the environment, tools, and machinery typical of a silk yarn factory from the second half of the 19th century, such as the 11 m high circular wooden twisting machine, which is perfectly functional. The museum, which houses the civic library, organizes events, educational workshops, and guided tours for school groups and tourists (www.museoabbadia.it). The first stage ends in front of the Church Saint Martin, which was mentioned for the first time in the 13th century. The late Romanesque church, deconsecrated in 1941, unfortunately, remained abandoned for decades due to neglect and vandalism, which finally led to the collapse of the roof and the theft of the altar fresco, a Crucifixion with the Blessed Virgin and saints John, Rocco, and Martino, of whom there was already news in the 16th century. Currently, the Municipality owns the church, which has renovated the roof and bricked up the doors and windows to avoid further damage. Although the interior is not visible, the privileged position in which the church stands guarantees a splendid panorama, which can be enjoyed from the area specially equipped for parking.
It is a city rich in history and monuments with a charming lakeside promenade. We remember the Palazzo delle Paure, the Ponte Azzone Visconti, the Medieval Tower, the Teatro della Società, the Santa Marta church, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Victory, and many other churches. We point out two curiosities: in the village of Pescarenico (now a district of the city), essential facts of Manzoni’s “The Betrothed” unfolds, and also in Lecco, we find the “Tabernacle of the Brave,” the famous place where Manzoni sets the stakeout of Don Abbondio by of the Bravi sent by Don Rodrigo. Villa Manzoni in Lecco is a national monument.
