The Columban Way is a sustainable tourism project. The primary objective of the members is to encourage people of all ages and social backgrounds to explore the European cultural heritage by traveling on foot or by bicycle through the Cammino di Colombano. This journey involves visiting places and sites of historical, archaeological and cultural significance, which develop through historic villages and settlements in rural, mountain and lake areas, small centers of great value.
The project involves local communities and administrations to welcome pilgrims and provide information on services and accommodation. The legacy of Columbanus and his companions includes Bangor Abbey, many towns and villages in Brittany marked by his passage to the present day, the monastic foundations in Luxeuil, in its surroundings (Annegray and Fontaine), and cities of Bregenz and St. Gallen near Lake Constance, where Gallo lived until his death and the city of Bobbio with its abbey.
Columban’s travels have been widely documented, including other sites, by tradition or historical hypothesis, such as Cornwall (UK), Burgundy, eastern France, and the Rhine Valley.
