LEG 2 - FROM COLI TO ST MICHAEL'S CAVE

Partenza:

Square of Coli

Arrivo:

Saint Michael Cave

Distanza:

2,7 Km

The path, at times impervious and 3 kilometers long, which leads to the cave, starts from the Coli square. The first stretch is asphalted, then you proceed on a mule track and finally on a path in the middle of chestnut woods. White and red CAI signs mark the itinerary. After traveling for a few hundred meters along the appropriately signposted road that descends from the town square, you will find a crossroads with signs for Faraneto, Pontremoli: you must not follow them but go straight, keeping to the right and passing the structures of the Coli sports field in progressive decline. After 700 m, we take the steeply downhill path on the left, which is another 250 m and takes us to a small bridge over the Curiasca stream (alt 494 m); after crossing a small stone bridge, continue on the path, entering the chestnut woods and begin to climb until you reach the crossroads sign where there is a sign with a map and a refreshment area with benches and a table (altitude 617 m). Here, you leave the road and continue left for another 400 m. descending along a narrow path that leads to the imposing rocky ravine.
We strongly advise you not to lean on the wooden fence, which is unsafe at the moment,  and to use the rope on the right to hold yourself up in the narrowest and most inaccessible sections. Once you reach the so-called cave, you can continue along the narrow path for a few dozen meters and see the only remaining wall of the ancient church. To return to Coli, it is necessary to return along the same road.
