HOME / TAPPE CREDENZIALI / SAINT COLUMBAN CHURCH
It is the place where Saint Columban passed at the beginning of the seventh century, on his way to Bobbio. Here he left the mark of his apostolate by converting the inhabitants to Christianity and teaching them the cultivation of the vine, which still retains the absolute priority on the 12 square kilometers of the hills that take his name.
The Parish of Saint Columban built in 1499, is characterized by a nineteenth-century neoclassical façade. With three naves, paintings by Bernardino Campi and Gian Giacomo Barbelli are kept inside. Among the side chapels is the votive chapel of the Rosary, which was erected after Manzoni’s plague of 1630. On the bell tower stands the statue depicting the blessing patron saint while among the works carried out by the provost Luigi Gallotta there is the grandiose reliquary of St. Columbanus completed in 1852 when he was certain to have the illustrious relic of a vertebra and a rib of the saint by Sant’Antonio Maria Gianelli, Bishop of Bobbio. Even today, on the feast of San Colombano which is celebrated on November 21 of each year, both the ancient eighteenth-century statue and the imposing reliquary are solemnly carried in procession through the streets of the historic center.
