HOME / CREDENTIAL LOCATIONS / SAINT ANTHONY’S BASILICA
Erected between 1928 and 1938, it was built on top of the previous parish church, which dates back to at least 1210. The original church was demolished and rebuilt in the fifteenth century on the plan of the previous one and in 1535 it was dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot.
In 1921, thanks to the work of the new parish priest Monsignor Enrico Rizzi, the problem of the construction of the new church arose again and the Milanese engineer Spirito Maria Chiappetta was chosen for this final project. On July 7, 1928, the first stone was laid and construction work began on the sacred temple. In ten years the church could be said to be ready and could be consecrated on October 28, 1938 by Mons. Pietro Calchi Novati, bishop of Lodi. On November 13 of that same year the beatification of Francesca Cabrini took place. The current church was built in Bramante’s neo-Renaissance style, in simple masonry and follows a plan in the shape of a Latin cross, divided into three naves and with a characteristic clover-shaped presbytery whose vaults rise upwards to the lantern, forming a dome with a total height of 30 meters. Inside the basilica, traces of the previous parish church are preserved, such as the chapel of the Madonna del Rosario, dating back to the fifteenth century and in full Renaissance style with an original altar and frescoes by Morazzone on the vault, flanked by the side ones made by the painter Arzuffi in the fifties. La Basilica is the temple of the patron saint of Migrants; in it is preserved the seventeenth-century baptistery where the saint was baptized on July 15, 1850. Dedicated to her is the most important of the chapels where a large central canvas by the painter Galizzi dominates flanked by two other paintings by the painter Cesare Secchi. On the marble altar there is a precious reliquary of the saint.
The Cabrini house-museum is located in Sant’Angelo; the current distribution of the premises is the result of subsequent changes, which took place starting in 1930, following the purchase by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of the house where Mother was born and the adjacent apartments, in anticipation of her beatification in 1938. The exhibition itinerary is divided into 6 rooms which are joined by a visit to the courtyard behind. There are objects and documents that introduce the history of the Saint starting from her origins, her family and the testimonies related to her childhood and adolescence, and then provide interesting attestations of her missionary activity.
