In Roman times there was the village of Medianum (Middle Earth), seat of the pagus Domitius. The area appears in a document of the Monastery of Bobbio of 747 and in 891 the Monastery of Saint Paul is mentioned, second in power to the monastery of Bobbio. In fact, it was autonomous and as for Bobbio it owned various fiefdoms scattered in northern Italy, twins to the foundations of the Bobbio monks. The Monastery of Mezzano, fortified after the year 1000, and the territory passed in 1141 under the dependencies of the municipality of Piacenza. Annexed to the monastery is the Castle, documents attest to the presence of a large moat full of water and a tower. In the thirteenth century the monastery was already in decline. After the Scotti took possession of the territory of Mezzano and the monastery, in 1460 the few monks had to retire to the nearby hamlet of Cadonica, where they founded the new monastic seat, now visible in the fortified tower and in the nearby oratory.
After the transfer there was complete decay and today only the ruins of the ancient monastery remain. The Castle, restored in 1506, passed to the Lateran Canons of the Church of Santa Maria della Passione in Milan. In 1551 the fortress was sold to Count Antonio Caracciolo, later it was adapted to a noble residence, towards the middle of the nineteenth century it passed together with the properties of Cadonica and the Tower, to the Follini, one of the oldest and most important families of the place. In 1924 the castle collapsed during modernization works, what remains of the fortress is incorporated into the complex of buildings still owned by the Follini. The hamlet was then incorporated into the territory of the municipality of Travo, until 1927 when it passed into the municipality of Bobbio. The current church was built in the sixteenth century as a new foundation of the church of Piacenza, depending directly on the Diocese of Piacenza. The building, which was remodeled several times in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, underwent a change in the orientation of the façade. In 1989, after the union of the Diocese of Piacenza with that of Bobbio, it passed into the vicariate of Bobbio.
