ANCIENT PATISH CHURCH OF VERDETO

SAINT THOMAS THE APOSTLE

AGAZZANO

The Ancient “Pieve of Verdeto” is a church dating back to the Romanesque-Gothic era located near Agazzano (PC).
The first news of its archpriesthood dates back to 1123, but its foundation is much older, certainly prior to the year 1000.
In 1123 Bishop Arduino had donated it to the Cathedral of Piacenza. Subsequently, on 15 July 1132, an act of Pope Innocent II listed eight parishes among the assets of the Cathedral and among these the Parish Church of Verdeto with all its chapels, exempting it, however, from the payment of tithes because the revenues of the Parish of Verdeto were very modest from then on.

Towards the middle of the eighteenth century the church was completely remodeled: in fact, the main altar in polychrome marble was inserted and the entire roof of the vault and the walls of the presbytery were decorated. The frescoes, of exceptional workmanship and quality, are traced back to the Bibiena school and constitute an example of very rare perspective decoration.
