Gallus way

HOME / COLUMBAN /GALLUS WAY

The Gallus Way is a walk in the footsteps of the Irish monk Gallus, who in 612 walked the path that led from Arbon to St. Gallen. Here he founded a hermitage which, a hundred years later, was transformed into an abbey around which the city was born.

The Gallus Way starts at Arbon station and leads to Steinach along the shores of Lake Constance. At the chapel of Arbon you can see the Gallus stone in which the monk’s footprints are engraved.
Then you pass through the village of Steinach and continue along the banks of the Steinach through meadows and forests until you reach St. Gallen. After the unique section through the Galgentobel, you reach the city of St. Gallen, more precisely the district of Neudorf. From here along the beautiful streets of the district you reach the city center, at the beginning of the Mühlenenschlucht, where Gallus laid the foundation stone of the city of St. Gallen founding his hermitage in 612 after falling into a thorny bush and encountering a bear.
You then continue through the pretty narrow streets of the old town past the monastery complex of St. Gallen until you reach the central station where the walk ends.

The Gallus Way is a single stage of 16 km, lasting 4 hours and 20 minutes with a climb of 520 meters.
Hikers on the Gall Trail follow in the footsteps of the itinerant Irish monk Gall, who, in 612, travelled from Arbon to St.Gallen and established his hermit’s cell in the Mülenen Gorge.
One hundred years later, an abbey was built on the site of this small cell – an abbey that became known as the “writing room of Europe” in the Middle Ages and one of the most important cultural centers of the West. The city of St. Gallen came into being around the abbey. Route: Arbon – Steinach – St.Gallen
